These are my ideas for the first (of 2) pages of the double paged spreads that I have to do for my ThinkMake class. I'm really going for simplicity since Tomer Hanuka's art is so graphic and colorful on its own.
Looking at them from top to bottom: 1. (top) the fragmentation of the text on the spine is really distracting. The image isn't as interesting as the others. 2) this is a great image; unfortunately the spine runs along the focal point of the illustration. You could move the image to the right page and put his name on the left. Still the kerning on his name is awkward. 3) The negative space here isn't functioning well on the left. Did you try having his name horizontal with the text in two columns or one fatter column underneath? Maybe bleed the light colored background on the left off the pages and also onto the right page so it doesn't look so isolated. 4) bottom...this is my favorite image: very colorful, the placement of the focal point is also on the right where we look first, the image extends onto the left page, and it has Godzilla--and you really can't go wrong with a giant lizard. Oh, but I guess that is not Godzilla but maybe a cousin? You could make his name slightly larger. What about aligning the text box on the left with the right edge of his name? but not right aligning the actual text. Or even moving the text box to the next column or so of the grid. This would off set his name and give you more white space on the left side of the page. Note that you do have a widow--actually half a widow on the bottom line. We are italicizing magazine names, so you could do that with Rolling Stone and leave off the word magazine.
